Football Basics

Football is a game that has eleven players a side and one substitute for each side, along with a referee to settle any disputes. The general idea of the game is to get the ball between the posts of the other team’s goal; whichever team scores the most goals is then declared the winner. Football is probably one of the most publicised games there is.

During the football season, there is hardly one television channel that doesn’t broadcast at least one game a week. Most people who like the sport have a favourite team and competition between the various football club fans is very high – occasionally it goes beyond competitiveness and erupts into violence. Having said that most serious football fans are not really into football violence but there are some hangers on who will cause trouble wherever they go.

Over the years there has been some correlation between football violence and alcohol and this has caused problems not only in this country, but when fans travelled to matches abroad. In the last few years the violence seems to have lessened and more people go just to enjoy the game. Britain has only won the world cup once and that was in 1966 but there are still some very big names in British football, and key players like David Beckham and Wayne Rooney, are now millionaires.
